<datacite:description xml:lang="en" descriptionType="Abstract">Although a great number of 19th century Japanese architectural models are preserved in European collections, expect from partial researches, there hasn`t been a general survey, that recorded the present conditions of these. The aim of this research is to exactly determine the state of existing architectural models in Europe, to understand the general processes of their creation and export from Japan, and to analyze their architectural characteristics, in order to understand the intentions behind their representation of Japanese architecture. By conducting a series of field researches in European collections on the budget of JSPS Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, completed with further investigations in museum archives, it was possible to record over 300 models. These can be divided into objects, which represent architectural aspects, objects, which use architectural forms, but modify it for some extent, and ones, which have a different function from representing architecture. Among the first group, one of the most remarkable is the Daimyo-residence model created for the 1973 Vienna World Exhibition by Manba Kamakichi, head of a luxury toy-shop in Asakusa. From the additional research on the background of its creation, it can also be understood, that Ohsima Mitsumoto, the last member of the Kora carpenter dynasty has also contributed to the design of the model. Based on the results of the architectural field research, we can observe, that this model aims to represent the different usages, and hierarchy levels through the application of a variety of actual construction technologies and materials. This can be regarded as a Pre-modern concept of architecture, which is probably connected to the professional contributors of both architecture, and miniature crafts.</datacite:description>
