本研究は、明治後半から戦後に到る近代のなかで日本の知識人・芸術家たちが、自らの生を支えるべく生み出していった《語り》が、政治学、経済学、歴史学、建築、美術工芸、文学、演劇、哲学などの諸局面で、どのような形で生産され、また消費されていったのか、その具体相を明らかにするものであった。《語り》とは、近代化によって従来の生の地盤が掘り崩されたあとに生じた空隙を補填すべく生み出されていった虚構である。それらは、多くの場合、「日本的」という言葉と結びついて語られたが、自ら紡ぎ出した幻影によって自分自身を吊り上げるとでもいった構造それ自体は、語り手自身の活動ジャンルを超え、またそれぞれが志向する「日本」イメージの差異にもかかわらず、一つの共通する自己存在の基本的なかたちとして、取り出されうるものであって、そうしたかたちを、近代化の過程のなかでのアイデンティティー喪失の自覚と結びつけるならば、この運命を共に蒙った近隣東アジアにおける、知識人の自己イメージを測る理念型が得られるであろうし、それはまたこの運命の発生源でもある欧米文化のなかの人間の自己理解の測定にも寄与すると考えられる。本研究の具体的成果は、中華人民共和国、台湾、連合王国、ドイツ、スイス、ブラジルの研究者に向けても発信されるとともに、主体性概念の系譜を問う新たなプロジェクトへとつながることとなった。 The subject of this research is the《Katari》which underlay the intellectuals and artists in Japan from 1890’s to1950’s. We examined how the 《Katari》was produced and consumed in the fields such as philosophy, political and economic thoughts, literature, architecture, crafts, fine and dramatic arts and so on. The 《Katari》means the common fundamental fictions. They were created in order to fill the vacancy, which arised after the modernization had destroyed the traditional livelihood. They were often with the adjective “Japanese”, but couldn’t embody the essence of the Japanese tradition, because such an “essence” is absent right from the beginning. In this sense, they remained only illusions. However, the tellers of the 《Katari》could sustain themselves by such fictional myths, and could meet their identity crisis raised by the modernization. This research revealed the structure of sustaining oneself by self-produced illusion. This structure is understood as a common form of the subject in the various fields, despite of the fact that their images of Japan are different from each other. Besides, we tried to use this form as an ideal type to examine the self-images of the contemporary intellectuals and artists, not only in the neighboring nations of the East Asia who experienced the same modernization, but also in the Western world as the origin of this worldwide destiny. This research enabled the exchange between the members and the researchers in the foreign countries such as China, Taiwan, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Switzerland. this research developed into a new research project about the genealogy of the concept《Syutaisei》, that is, the Japanese subjectivity. |
